Chinese officials announced Friday that they will meet with a representative of the Dalai Lama within the week.
The state-run Xinhua news agency quoted a Chinese official saying that the meeting is hoped to bring an end to pro-Tibetan protests that have disrupted the Olympic torch relay and threaten to spill over into the 2008 Beijing Games.
President George W. Bush has been calling for dialogue between China and the Dalai Lama since the protests began last month.
"We are hopeful that this will be a new direction in their relationship," said White House spokeswoman Dana Perino.
I wonder how much will actually be accomplished at these talks.
