Arms Dealer Stays in Thailand

Thai police said Friday that Viktor Bout, one of the world's most notorious arms dealers, will be held in Thailand for investigation. The United States is seeking his extradition.

Viktor Bout, 41, was detained Thursday at a hotel in Bangkok, where American officials said he had come to finalize a deal to sell and transport portable surface-to-air missiles and other weapons to men he believed represented the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.

But the multimillion-dollar deal he allegedly thought he had with Colombian rebels was really the culmination of an elaborate four-month sting operation concocted by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Bout is under investigation for "procuring weapons for terrorists and conspiring with terrorists." Under Thai law, he could be held for up to 84 days without trial while police investigate the charges, which carry a 10-year prison sentence. Bout is suspected of supplying weapons to Taliban and al Qaeda, and of pouring arms into civil wars in Africa.

Ten years in prison? Please. He should get life in prison.

I don't know if he should get life in jail. 10 years definitely isn't enough to me either. A crime dealing weapons that could kill many should be severely punished, but he isn't actually doing the killing. I would be content with 25-30 years because at his age, his life will nearly be over with anyway. I think the undefined sentences should be left to the most serious offenses.
