Palestinian Leader Resumes Peace Talks

On Wednesday, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, and Israeli officials were resuming peace talks. Abbas broke off negotiations on Sunday when 120 Palestinians were killed during an offensive.

Although Ms. Rice did not specify when the talks would resume, she said an American general who was overseeing the effort to carry out the “road map” peace plan would hold his first joint meeting with the Israeli and Palestinian sides next week.

“I have been informed by the parties that they intend” to return to peace negotiations, Ms. Rice told reporters after meeting in Jerusalem with the Israeli foreign minister, Tzipi Livni.

The Gaza Strip has been unstable for months. The Hamas militant group, which controls the area, blames Israel for the violence.

"We are in a state of self-defence. When the siege and all forms of aggression come to a stop then we will see," its spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said on Tuesday.

I hope the peace talks will at least help to regain a little stability.
